More Information on Edexcel IAL A Level Maths and Further Maths

The Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) Maths qualifications are modular, offering students the flexibility to take exams (units) in different sessions (January, May/June, October) and bank their results toward the final qualification.

Edexcel IAL A Level Mathematics (YMA01) 

The Edexcel IAL A Level Mathematics qualification requires a total of six units. Four are compulsory Pure Mathematics units, and two are chosen from the applied options.


Compulsory Pure Maths Units (4):

  • Pure Mathematics 1 (P1 - WMA11). Topics tested include: Differentiation, integration and applications; surds; inequalities; simultaneous equations; transformations; standard trigonometry; composite shapes. 
  • Pure Mathematics 2 (P2 - WMA12). Topics tested include: Differentiation, integration and applications; binomial expansions; AP and GP; logarithms, exponential problems; equations of circles 
  • Pure Mathematics 3 (P3 - WMA13). Topics tested include: More advanced differentiation and integration techniques; more advanced trigonometry and trig equations (inc inverse trig functions); modulus equations; composite functions
  • Pure Mathematics 4 (P4 - WMA14). Topics tested include: More advanced differentiation (inc implicit differentiation) and integration techniques (inc integration by parts, substitution and partial fractions); volumes of revolution; vectors; first order differential equations; parametric equations; non integer binomial expansions; proofs by contradiction


Optional Applied Units (Choose 2): You must choose two units from the following options: 


  • Mechanics 1 (M1 - WME01). Topics tested include: Equations of motion (SUVAT), Newton’s laws of motion (F=ma), momentum, forces (weight, tension, thrust, normal reaction, limiting friction etc), motion of connected particles, horizontal and inclined particle projections, 2D vectors, moments
  • Statistics 1 (S1 - WST01). Topics tested include: probability (including Venn diagrams and conditional probability), discrete random variables, expectation and variance, binomial distribution, normal distribution (including standardisation), coding, measures of location and dispersion, correlation and regression (including product-moment correlation)
  • Decision Mathematics 1 (D1 - WDM01)


Edexcel IAL Further Mathematics (XFM01/YFM01) 

The Edexcel IAL A Level Further Mathematics qualification requires a total of six units. These units must not be the same as any of the six units used for your IAL A Level Mathematics award.

Compulsory/Core Further Pure Units (2):

  • Further Pure Mathematics 1 (FP1 - WFM01) is Compulsory.
  • You must also choose either WFM02 (FP2) OR WFM03 (FP3) as your second core unit.


Advanced Options (Choose 4): The remaining four units are selected from the advanced pure and applied units, which include:


  • Further Pure Mathematics 2 (FP2 - WFM02);
  • Further Pure Mathematics 3 (FP3 - WFM03);
  • Mechanics 2 (M2 - WME02). Topics Tested include: Equations of motion in two dimensions, vectors and motion in a plane, vector momentum and impulse, Newton’s law of restitution, work, energy and power, centre of mass of systems and laminae, equilibrium of rigid bodies, and further applications of Newton’s laws to connected particles and inclined planes; 
  • Mechanics 3 (M3 - WME03). Topics tested include: motion under variable accelerations and forces, projectiles with variable resistance, work and energy in advanced contexts, simple harmonic motion (SHM), centre of mass of complex laminae and objects, centripetal force and circular motion, and moments of inertia;
  • Statistics 2 (S2 - WST02). Topics tested include: probability (including conditional probability and combined events), discrete and continuous random variables, expectation and variance, binomial, normal and poisson distributions, sampling and estimation (including confidence intervals), hypothesis testing (one-tailed and two-tailed tests), and advanced correlation and regression analysis;
  • Statistics 3 (S3 – WST03). Topics tested include: advanced probability, continuous random variables (including probability density functions, cumulative distribution functions and transformations, and expectation and variance thereof, the normal and t-distributions, sampling and estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing for means and variances (including paired and two-sample tests), correlation and regression, chi-squared methods (goodness-of-fit tests and contingency tables), and non-parametric tests (including Spearman’s rank correlation and the sign test); and 
  • Decision Mathematics 1 (D1).


⚠️ Key Rule: No Overlap: If a unit is used towards your IAL Mathematics award (e.g., M1 or S1), it cannot be used towards your IAL Further Mathematics award. To achieve both IAL Mathematics and IAL Further Mathematics, you must pass 12 distinct units in total.

The UK A Level Maths (9MA0) and Further Maths (9FM0) qualifications are linear qualifications, meaning all assessment is typically taken at the end of the two-year course in the May/June examination series.

1. A Level Mathematics (9MA0): The UK A Level Mathematics qualification is made up of three equally weighted papers.

  • Paper 1 (9MA0/01): Pure Mathematics 1
    • Weighting: 33 1/3%.
    • Content: All Pure Mathematics topics.
    • Duration: 2 hours, 100 marks.
    • Status: Compulsory.


  • Paper 2 (9MA0/02): Pure Mathematics 2
    • Weighting: 33 1/3%.
    • Content: All Pure Mathematics topics (Pure content can be assessed on either Paper 1 or Paper 2).

    • Content: Statistics and Mechanics, combined into a single paper (often split into Section A: Statistics and Section B: Mechanics).

2. A Level Further Mathematics (9FM0): The UK A Level Further Mathematics qualification is made up of four equally weighted papers: two core papers and two optional papers.

  • Compulsory Core Papers (2):
    • Paper 1 (9FM0/01): Core Pure Mathematics 1 (25% weighting)
    • Paper 2 (9FM0/02): Core Pure Mathematics 2 (25% weighting)
    • Both papers are 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks.


  • Optional Papers (Choose 2):
    • Students must choose two distinct papers from the eight options below. Each option paper is 25% of the qualification and is 1 hour 30 minutes long (75 marks).
    • Further Pure Options:
      • 3A: Further Pure Mathematics 1 (9FM0/3A)
      • 4A: Further Pure Mathematics 2 (9FM0/4A)
    • Further Statistics Options:
      • 3B: Further Statistics 1 (9FM0/3B)
      • 4B: Further Statistics 2 (9FM0/4B)
    • Further Mechanics Options:
      • 3C: Further Mechanics 1 (9FM0/3C)

The AQA A Level Mathematics (7357) and Further Mathematics (7367) qualifications are linear, meaning all exams are typically taken at the end of the two-year course.


1. A Level Mathematics (7357): The A Level Mathematics qualification is made up of three equally weighted papers.

  • Paper 1: Pure Mathematics
    • Weighting: 33 1/3​%.
    • Content: All Pure Mathematics topics (e.g., proof, algebra, calculus, vectors, numerical methods).
    • Duration: 2 hours, 100 marks.
    • Status: Compulsory.


  • Paper 2: Pure Mathematics and Mechanics
    • Weighting: 33 1/3​%.
    • Content: Pure Mathematics content, plus all Mechanics content (e.g., kinematics, forces, Newton's laws, moments).

    • Content: Compulsory Core Pure Mathematics (a continuation of Paper 1 content).

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics qualifications are linear, with all external examinations completed at the end of the two-year Diploma Programme. Assessment consists of written exam papers and an internally assessed coursework component (the IA).

The AA SL qualification consists of two exam papers plus the Internal Assessment.
