TMUA Coaching

The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is increasingly being recommended (and occasionally required) as a part of the application process to study maths and maths-based subjects (such as Economics, Computer Science and Engineering) at undergraduate level in top universities in the United Kingdom (such as Cambridge, LSE, ICL, Durham and Warwick).

Many students find the TMUA very hard (the median mark is only around 40% - universities are interested in marks around 60%) and the reason for that is not that they don't know the maths, because the mathematical content of the exam is no harder than A-Level, Further Maths or Higher IB maths.

It is because the maths is tested in a fashion that will feel unfamiliar to most A-Level, Further Maths and IB students, namely applying existing mathematical knowledge to new 'mathematical situations', and applying mathematical reasoning and logic to solving abstract problems.

Furthermore, no calculators or formula booklets are allowed, the examination (which consists of two 75 minute papers) is multiple choice, and there are severe time constraints in completing the requisite questions in the allotted time.

All in all, this is an exam where coaching can massively improve the chances of obtaining a high enough score to interest top universities, and fortunately here at Gresty Academy we have a Cambridge University Maths Graduate who is an expert in coaching the TMUA exam and divulging the tricks, tips, skills, ways of thinking and mathematical short cuts required to achieve success.

On the Gresty Academy YouTube Channel we have created a podcast just for TMUA students. Entitled 'A Crash Course in TMUA Must-Know Maths', it consists of hundreds of short teaser videos testing maths concepts which need to be understood in order to ace the TMUA - new short videos are uploaded to the podcast nearly every day.

To be clear, far more preparation needs to be done by the student than simply watching the videos on the podcast, however they are a fantastic aide to the revision process and contain an abundance of must-know TMUA maths and techniques. We should also note that what is and isn't tested on the TMUA changes all the time, hence a handful of the videos in this podcast are on topics that are not on the current TMUA 'syllabus', however they are still very useful in advancing mathematical knowledge and thinking.

Also on the Gresty Academy YouTube Channel we have a 'Challenging Maths Teasers' podcast, which also consists of hundreds of short videos testing maths concepts. Even though many of the topics covered in these teasers will certainly not be tested on the TMUA, working through the teasers is great practice at advancing the mathematical brain and thinking in new ways, as well as picking up new mathematical techniques.
